My
design is based on the analysis of each households living space, the unit is
divided into living space (living, dining and bedroom) and working space
(kitchen, laundry room, bathroom) two spaces. Then, I used the two surfaces to
represent these two a space. Because of the natural advantages of sea views on
Bondi, which can enrich the quality the living surface, the living surface can
be constructed face to the ocean view. So, I need to create another surface,
working surface. My idea is came from the working in the kitchen, I think
people's work area is a radius not more than one meter's semi-circular area,
and equipment required for the work should be surrounded by people rather than people
need to move to use it. I thought The second surface can be flowing and
flexible that kitchen equipment can be placed, while providing outstanding
indoor and outdoor connecting surface to guide the entire apartment circulation,
and interacting with landscape. But while facing the wall cannot achieve a
large area lighting or ventilation, which, incidentally, has become my another
idea, using this thick walls to protect the privacy of this apartment. By
combining these two surfaces and together, I got the initial shape of the
building, a long block of apartments.
Next,
the entire sit analysis, the Northeast side buildings of the site are higher which can look into our site, and the
Southeast side has the view of the Bondi beach. So I can bend the initial block
into a L-shaped building, and place on the Northeast side of the site. On the one
hand it can protect the entire apartment's privacy by blocking the views, on
the other hand, it create a private communal courtyard face to the sea, and all
living surface are facing to the sea and communal garden. And northeast side of
the land can be left to become a circulation space. This space has an
interesting wall and a lot of landscape compositions communicate with the
working surface wall.
The
second step, I pull two L-shaped blocks outer to get a secondary garden in the
northeast corner. To do so, not only interrupted the long circulation space,
and got a sunny garden which has a completely different experience compare with
the courtyard space.
The
third step will be two slightly rotating of 2 blocks, increasing the courtyard space
while make circulation space become opening to the secondary garden rather than
being 2 parallel space, This can promote the flow of traffic from spatial
aspect.
Restaurant
is placed on the road and has 2 floors. First it may get sea views, the second
is to enhance the privacy of the Communal garden.
Wall
design for work, I have analyzed the human body, and made a 30 cm thick multi-layered
walls, which can be easily installed with facilities, lighting, seats. It can
be designed more rational and functional in detail, which includes the lighting
for different purpose, ventilation needs, vertical circulations, the needs of
the seat against the wall.
A
total of 10 apartment layout simpler taken two ways. For apartment on north,
the majority have a jump-out balcony so that they get a sea view outdoor space.
Built-east balcony was dig-in terrace to reduce the overheating summer sun.
Dining and living rooms and more outdoor space around the balcony, workspace is
a lot of the advantages of using the working surface wall.
There
are two structural systems, one is frame structure, making the side closed to
the courtyard can have large area of the opening. The second is a simple masonry
of structure that will work for their own l
oad-bearing of those curve walls.
